MASTERING & CUTTING

Pallas USA Mastering ServicesIf you plan to supply us with high-resolution digital files, Pallas offers "top-shelf" mastering services that can produce either lacquer or DMM masters. Despite our meticulousness, our standard turn around time for mastering, cutting, plating and test pressing is a very reasonable 7-10 working days. If you plan on mastering from analog tape, we strongly suggest working with a mastering house in your area and not shipping your precious analog tapes. We have compiled a list of trusted mastering houses that can produce high quality cuts and can send lacquers directly to our pressing plant in Diepholz, Germany via next day FedEx or UPS.

GALVANICS / PLATING

Pallas USA Galvanics

For over 60 years we have continually updated and upgraded our in-house plating / galvanics lab which is one of our proudest achievements. Here, our experienced technicians process your incoming lacquers, DMM or Mother plates and create stamper plates used to press your vinyl records.

Lacquer processing is 3 step procedure: the lacquer is first sputtered with a silver coating and then put into a special nickel bath where an electro-forming process creates a new plated layer. This layer is separated from the lacquer to create the Master or Father plate. The Father is a negative image of the grooved playing surface. It could be used to stamp records, but since the lacquer gets destroyed in the plating process, once the Father is worn out, no more records can be produced unless you start over with a newly cut lacquer. Therefore, the Father goes through the electroplating process to produce a grooved Mother plate, which is then plated to produce a finished stamper, sometimes referred to as Child.

Perhaps all of this grooving and plating and fathering and mothering helps explain why records are so darn sexy. The stamper will eventually wear out but the Mother can then be used repeatedly to spawn new stampers as needed with no loss of sound quality. If you are lucky enough to sell a sufficient number of records to eventually tire out the Mother, or if it's damaged during stamper creation, another can be produced from the Father and record production can continue.

Our galvanic department's staff of skilled tradesmen have decades of plating experience. Plating quality is as important as pressing quality. Since it was first constructed, the entire galvanic laboratory has undergone continual upgrading and modification as new techniques and improved equipment have been developed. The galvanic lab is committed to producing the highest possible quality plating. The plating and pressing teams work closely together to ensure that the plated stampers perform optimally in the pressing plant's bank of Swedish Toolex presses and with our specially formulated PVC material.

VINYL RECORD PRESSING

Pallas has been in the business of pressing vinyl records since 1949. Over the years, much in the pressing business has changed. We've been in the forefront of many of the record pressing industry's most significant advances. Pallas devoted a great deal of time and spent a considerable amount of money during the 1960s to bring automation to the record pressing process. The creation of a more consistent and stable pressing environment resulted in a pressing plant capable of producing consistently high quality vinyl records throughout an entire run cycle. Before the institution of these innovations, records were pressed manually, which meant cycle times varied from record to record and so did quality.

We continue to innovate today. Our custom PVC formulation produces consistently high pressing quality with the lowest surface noise in the industry. Our PVC complies with 2015 European environmental standards and does not contain toxic materials such as Lead, Cadmium or Toluene. Our vinyl is both audiophile and eco-grade! We press using ten fully automated Alpha Toolex 12" presses as well as three Toolex 7" presses. We also have several semi-automated presses used to create test pressings, custom color/effect vinyl and 12" picture discs. In addition to our 12" and 7" formats, Pallas also offers 10" and 5" records. Our 12" records are available in three weights: 120g, 140g and heavyweight 180g. If colored vinyl is your thing, we have a variety of vinyl colors. Custom colors can also be mixed. Pressed records are lifted from the trim platter via a pneumatic suction cup system, gently deposited into a protective dust sleeve and stacked flat in a cooling crate—all without being touched by human hands. This system better protects the playing surface than systems that "bare stack" finished records on a spindle upon exiting the press. Once the records have cooled for 24 hours, our quality control team, using protective gloves, visually inspects each record. While on the press, our quality control team continually listens to records coming off the press to ensure the last record pressed sounds as good as the first.

PRINTING & PACKAGING

Pallas also offers premium print and packaging services. Center labels are printed on robust stock and then oven dried for 24 hours to remove moisture from the paper to ensure that the label will hold up under the intense heat and pressure of the press. We offer spot color and process color label printing and provide free digital PDF proofs. Pallas USA Printing & PackagingIn addition, our pre-press operators are quick to alert customers of any artwork color combinations that might be susceptible to fading during the pressing process. All of this meticulous preparation produces consistently stunning looking vinyl records. We also offer jacket, dust cover and insert printing. Whether you need a "direct to board," or old-school "case-wrapped" jacket, we've got you covered. Pallas also offers digital download card hosting & printing (for those wishing to add a bonus digital copy to the package), marketing stickers, UPC code labels, case-wrapped boxes and slipcases and anything else the creative mind can conceive.

ASSEMBLY & FINISHING

Our vinyl specific assembly and kitting facility specializes in complex and delicate assemblies including box sets, subscription series kits, hand numbering and white glove hand work as well as standard jacket and gatefold assembly. Our packaging lines are set up with a zero fail goal and quality assurance testing is required for every package. We not only perform physical line checks, we also use weight checks down to the milligram to ensure all items are accounted for in each package. Although Pallas provides a full line of print and packaging options, we are happy to use your supplied materials. This provides our customers with complete flexibility. Once the finished product is assembled, all records are boxed within our specially designed vinyl cartons and then palletized for the ultimate in shipping protection. For any single box drop-ships going FedEx, UPS or USPS, Pallas goes the extra mile to use a specially designed box with 2 inches of void fill around all six sides, thus ensuring your vinyl a safe and sound delivery.

GRAPHIC DESIGN & RE-CREATION

Pallas USA has a full-service graphic design department specializing in large format creative packaging design. Our designers will work closely from concept to final proofing to make sure you are completely happy with the final product. We also offer design re-creation for companies looking to re-issue a title where the original assets are unavailable and only a physical copy exists. In addition to performing meticulous scanning and file optimization, we can also completely redo all type and line art imagery for crisp, clean lines instead of the dreaded blurry reissues you often see on the shelves.
